About Zero Waste Week

This week (7-11 September) is Zero Waste Week. The awareness campaign was started by Rachelle Strauss in 2004, and now inspires millions around the world. It draws the spotlight on our consumption and waste levels and highlights the actions we can all be taking to counteract the damage being caused to our planet as a result. The team behind the campaign is sending out daily emails this week with facts and tips, sign up here. You can also get involved by using the hashtag #zerowasteweek on social media.

BeeBee & Leaf and Zero Waste Week

Each day this week we will look at one simple swap you can make in your home to cut down, or eliminate, waste. We’re also giving away a Zero Waste Week hamper - details below. So, read on and check back daily to find out more about the brilliant sustainable businesses that we’re partnering with. Between them they are tackling coffee cups, food storage, plastic waste, clingfilm, supermarket packaging, sanitary products, baby wipes, and bathroom products.

Spotlight on food waste (and its packaging)

By the time your fruit and veg reaches you from a supermarket it could have flown thousands of miles, while being packaged in single use plastic. One of the biggest sources of waste for the average family is the supermarket shop. It’s also one of the biggest causes of overwhelm for those looking to start living more sustainably.

Abel & Cole Medium Food Box

How can you reduce your supermarket waste?

For fresher, naked, longer lasting, and seasonal produce, it’s worth checking out suppliers like Abel & Cole. They deliver fantastic boxes of organic fruit & veg (and bread, milk, meat…) to homes across the country, and have been for over 30 years now. Also shopping in your local zero waste shops, even partially, can at least start to reduce your food shop waste – both packaging and the actual food you throw away.
